Over 3000 Catalinas were built in nine years of production. They were exemplary aircraft capable of ranging for over two thousand miles and operating from forward air bases without landing strips. With their long range and radar, Catalinas were an invaluable asset to the Navy. They were instrumental in locating enemy forces, bombing and strafing enemy vessels, and for pulling downed airmen out of the sea. Even today, Catalinas are saving lives by putting out wild fires.
